Welcome to American Sign Language! I am delighted to have you in my class and I hope you will embrace learning to communicate in American Sign Language with deaf and hard of hearing people and learn more about their language and culture.

Master ASL Fingerspelling, Numbers, and Glossing
Course Description and Expectations:
Students will be able to communicate utilizing American Sign Language with others at a basic level concerning themselves, family, friends, and everyday routines.
Students will be able to develop basic receptive and expressive skills in ASL.
Students will acquire awareness of Deaf culture and the Deaf Community.
Students will be given a wide variety of learning experiences including but not limited to: presentations, group work, paired practice, role playing, culminating projects, video journals, etc.
Participation is vital. This includes: all in class activities, assignments both in class and out of class, being attentive and respectful to the language and the culture,
Students will communicate receptively and expressively with deaf and hard of hearing adults and young people alike, in person to experience ASL language immersion.

Academic honesty is expected of all students. Violations of academic honesty include, but are not limited to, copying, allowing someone to copy one's work, using cheat sheets, plagiarizing, and using technology to transmit or receive information inappropriately.
Your grade will be based on what you are able to do with the language. It is a performance based grade designed to make certain that you are able to use the language in meaningful ways beyond the classroom.
